I normally don’t just post links, but you’ve gotta check this out… This guy is a graffiti artist in the U.K. named Banksy. Nobody knows who he is but he stencils subversive paintings on all kinds of public buildings and streets and other stuff (including the West Bank wall)

First off, Banksy’s stuff is hilarious, powerful and just plain good art!
Your points are well taken. I did have the Reformation in mind when I mentioned the individualism movement (which was already part of the culture before the Reformation took place and probably led to the taking of the doctrine of Sola Scriptura a bit too far).
In answer to your second point, yes, I can see how this would be a very modern approach to the understanding of the Bible and how it is to be read. My emphasis however is not that each individual needs to find a very basic, aphoristic thought from every text. Oftentimes I think that the commentators (modern) that I read turn the beauty of the Biblical text into less than what it could have been. I think that you hit a great point when you quote Rollins. The Bible is uniquely divine and human and thereby just as hard to understand and complex as a person would be. I think that we need to let the text read us, instead of approaching the text as yet another thing the modern mind has to conquer.
Thank you for putting me in my place in regards to my comments about the education of McLaren. I appreciate your honest comments. I do not intend to be elitist or overly critical. I think that McLaren raises some important questions that not many Christians think about today. But, as you said, I don’t agree with his theology.
Oh, and I’m pretty sure that the modern movement does have some good to offer. Every movement has goods and bads. The emphasis on objectivity and the attempt to get there was not all bad or fruitless. It’s just that now we are moving into the Postmodern movement we realize the limits of such a pursuit.

I think you make a good theological point when you say that we don’t always know the right direction, but can more easily pick out the wrong ones. It’s kind of like a concession to letting God direct and guide us.

Surprised By Hope is similar to the other books of Wright’s that I have read. It reminds me of Paul’s epistles (to use a possibly dangerous analogy). Wright begins with a section of theological underpinnings and then in the final section moves into the implications. There’s a lot in this book for sure. The one thing that is hard about Wright is how dense his logic and thoughts can be. I sometimes find myself reading the same paragraph a few times before I understand the point.
Living in tension seems to be the name of the game for Christians of this age (and all). We live with the tension of a fallen world and the one to come, the fallen nature and the Spirit nature, and as an added bonus, modernity and postmodernity.
You know who was really (sort of) ahead of his time as far as an acknowledgment of the mythical nature of the biblical story, calling it the ‘one true myth’? J.R.R. Tolkien. Pretty cool. There’s a book I want to read by Bradley Birzer called Tolkien’s Sanctifying Myth about how Tolkien’s story embodies the spirit of the Christian story and what myth meant to Tolkien.
I have not read Why We’re Not Emergent, but I have read reviews and excerpts, and honestly thought the same thing you did. Seems like they just want to understand the movement on their own terms and definitions.

Banksy is great! There is a small piece of graffiti near the little mac bridge that reminds me of something he would do. The picture you included is by far one of my favorites.
